Study suggests 4-to-3 lane conversions don't impact emergency response times

TRIPS Lab researchers found no impact on emergency response rates before and after road diet projects. Most EMS responders think road diets don't affect emergency response times, but that road users may not know how to properly yield to emergency vehicles on 3-lane roads.

Bike Club Safety Camp by the numbers

Since 2022, the TRIPS Lab team and community partners have conducted 15 weeks of educational bike safety programming with kids ages 9-12. A total of 125 kids have completed this 12-hour program, riding over 2,000 miles. Additionally, 62 parents have completed on virtual training session on safe cycling.

Changes to Iowa's Crosswalk Law

As of July 1st, 2024, all non-motorists using crosswalks are protected by the updated State of Iowa traffic code. Prior to this change the state traffic code read that only pedestrians (a person afoot) were protected, and now essentially all persons using crosswalks are protected. This means that penalties are applicable to any motor vehicle driver that does not yield to individuals using the crosswalk.
